San Marino

Today it's off to San Marino to find at least one geocache in my 33rd caching country. At the same time I shall check out some of the border stuff.

Looking South into San Marino from Italy at the crossing on the SP15TER - Via Drogana (Italy), Via Rivo Fontanelle (San Marino)

Another view of the same entrance.

On the eastern border of San Marino there is a road that runs along the border in San Marino - the Strada di Monte Olivo. This is a border marker at the south end of this road.

Same marker from another angle.

Same border marker in context.

Proceeding about 250 up the road which then turns to the right into Italy, I stopped and took this photo looking back into San Marino.

This is looking back down the "border road" - the border marker just to the left of the street sign.

Close up of the border marker

Another angle

And, for completeness, another angle.

I then headed off to Montescudo, crossing into and back out of San Marino again.

The border is in the middle of the bridge - this is looking into Italy.

Closer shot showing the signs better

Looking back into San Marino.

I didn't have a lot of time to do much border stuff here as it was a long drive back to Rome (about 350km) and I had an early plane to catch the next morning.

Vatican City

Flew to Rome from München on my (roundabout) way to London - arrived late and the power was out when I reached my hotel not far from the airport. This made it difficult to actually identify which building actually was the hotel, not to mention the fact that I had to figure out all the circuit breakers that had tripped in order to get light in my room - sigh!! After settling in I decided to head into Rome to take my opportunity to find the two Vatican City caches and to actually set foot in the Vatican (thereby gaining one more border crossing). Found the caches - easy in the dark - not too many muggles - saw St. Peter's Square. Got stopped by the police trying to get out of the square the short way - waited till they had gone and then exited that way anyway.

Tomorrow, off to San Marino.
